i did a little portrait project at the fair last week. like the titanic i was kind of doomed from the get go due to the location where i chose to put my backdrop up. it was in the shade at first then problems with that big star in the center of our galaxy started happening……and the dear breeze began to blow hard.

but, all that aside, it was a good learning experience and i’ve gained an appreciation for lights and those who use them. well, maybe just a better understanding of how hard it is. but, it’s really not that hard….you just have to practice. like everything in life, practice, practice practice. who am i kidding, it’s really hard to get a thorough knowledge of lighting.

i have so many things that i need to practice. most deal with me stepping out of the comfort zone, something which is hard to do, but once you do it you’re better off. so, i guess it’s just the doing then.

caps

Monday, August 18th, 2008

my mom used to read to me a lot when i was a kid. one book we read together often was called “caps for sale.”

i loved that book and can remember getting it at the lakeland learning tree. gosh, i couldn’t have been more than 3 or 4. what a great book. it was awesome because when i was a kid my mom worked at the same daycare place i attended. it was like having a stay-at-home mom. coolness….

anyway, i think that book is buried deep in my unconsciousness because i’m always drawn to photograph people wearing hats. i have some hats, but don’t wear them often. i think that had i lived and photographed people in the 1920s i would have been on hat overload. i mean everyone wore hats. that must have been awesome.

heat wave

Monday, August 18th, 2008

it’s funny to think that when it gets to be 80 degrees here we look for heat pictures. i will admit that my skin has gotten used to the nice weather. it’s good for the soul, body, and mind. 85 degrees actually seems hot to me now. spoiled by northwestern weather….ahhh

seriously dude

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

the last post was a prequel to what you’re about to see….

my pal kevin is on fire right now. he’s in china covering the olympics. his take on this is not the games themselves, but the culture of the games.

he keeps a blog here that is worth a look, but give yourself so time before looking…you’ll need it.

looking at his most recent work from china is like eating your favorite food everyday. his blog and olympic gallery, which you can see here, is just that good.

kevin, seriously, damn fine job……keep inspiring earthlings like myself.

in its 49th year the festival features greats like steve earle, jakob dylan, she & him,
