view from the crow’s nest

i’ve lost a lot of something recently that i hold near and dear to me. sleep.

it eludes me a times. i used to think i had insomnia, but i dont. i do have something though. a ferris wheel brain that never stops spinning. it happens madly at night. i really need to have a night job. like if i could work from 8 p.m until 3 a.m., that would rock.

last night (this morning) it was the time ahead of now. i had a good chat with my boss the other day about the future and its possibilities. like maybe going to grad school in an attempt to try and ride out the newspaper storm. traveling…yada yada.

he advised me to start thinking long term all little bit. which makes sense, it doesn’t hurt to have direction.

so in five years……my main goal and what i’m going to work really at is to be in a band.

bye

Monday, September 8th, 2008

goodbye whimsical whatnots. readership has fallen to an all-time low today and i decided that it’s just not worth the effort.

i’ll be working with my new pal jack from now on. he and i will be kicking it old school with ribbon and sliders.

peace.

regatta

Monday, September 1st, 2008

i don’t hesitate for two seconds to say that i have the greatest job in the world. i’m not trying to brag or anything, but the stuff i get paid to just absolutely rocks. getting to use the creative side of the brain everyday is stimulating’ly awesome.

yesterday my job was to go out on a boat and photograph a regatta on bellingham bay. damn, that sucks. a paid ride out into the middle of a gorgeous bay to take pictures, yes take pictures, of people sailing with spectacular views. it’s almost hard to take in or fathom.

while a photojournalist works their tail off just like any other, well most other, professionals, we still have a solid gig that i wouldn’t trade for anything, well, almost anything (rockstar).

it’s just great. life it great, don’t take a second of it for grant it. act on impulse because that’s who you really are at your core. don’t be shy. talk to people, they are what makes the world spin. :)

this means fall

Monday, September 1st, 2008

nothing says fall more than high school football. the smells of it, the sounds of it, the look of it; it’s fall.

i’m really looking forward to my first friday night under the lights this year. i can’t wait to hear grown men yelling at 16-year-olds taking this game, yes it is a game, way too serious, almost so serious that the joy has been totally extracted and it now becomes a burden, a worry, a missed opportunity to do something else, something that could be more beneficial down the road.

i was actually having this conversation with a friend last night. we were chatting about high school sports. they are such a waste of time. while a lot of my friends were hanging out and enjoying their high school lives, i was stuck on a field with too much testosterone fueled anger. i’m not complaining, really, it had its fun times, and i do miss it, but had i spent all those afternoons jamming……that would have been cool. or maybe reading. just anything that i could carry my entire life instead of memories that i can only share with fellow athletes when we’re all together for a friend’s wedding or something like that. those were the days…..actually they weren’t. these are the days. the days of discovery and joy. freedom.

the spectacle of opportunity that awaits a generation of gamers is so incredibly vast that no human could grasp it. that’s why there’s so much confusion. too much to choose from.

all that aside, i would much rather cover high school football with my camera than play. it really is fun because there is total candidness on that field. those kids play their hearts out, well most of them. i’m going to focus on lineman this year because they never get any cred and they are the soul of a team.

end of summer brings the blues

Monday, September 1st, 2008

labor day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. sad times for sure. no more sun in the air until 10:30 p.m. that ended a month or so ago. on comes the rain and fall. i say bring it. something smells like tuna, or maybe it’s cat food. it stinks.

see what i mean about the blue though? crazy.

it’s baffling to see people be cut and dry. your pictures have to have this or that or maybe they’re missing something. we can’t do this can’t do that can’t you read the sign? ha, that’s a great song, but it’s so true.

what is cut and dry though? is there such a thing as truth. we only believe green is green because someone told us that, but maybe it’s really red? truth, it’s funny thing.
