my favorite picture of the year is actually one i took last year. it’s weird i know. but it’s like the only picture to resonate with me for the past two years. that’s how little i feel like i’ve progressed. i hate it, but whatever.

my mind juggles all this crap about style and vision and content way too much. i think that’s why i like this picture. it was there and i snapped it. it’s just as simple as that. no style, tilt, or weird depth of field thing. not a complicated picture to make by any means.

i do believe in “seeing” and think that photographer’s work is going to vary from person to person. but, then there is over the top. style, vision, etc.

look at the magnum photographers that came up in the 30s 40s 50s etc, the classic photographers. their pictures are completely timeless and resonate to the human condition. then look at the “visionaries” of today and yeah, i mean they’re a photographer’s cherry pie, but i bet the average human doesn’t see what’s special about them.

all in all i guess it’s what ever cup of tea you like to drink.

diversifying—important to growth

the more diverse the better.

i’ve been stuck in some musical ruts lately. spinning the same tracks over and over. wearing out cd’s and some of my favorite artists. i’m going to try and go a week without them. all new stuff.

last night i spent a lot of time listening to npr’s listeners best albums of 2008. some great stuff on there and i’m glad i heard it.

stuff i gotta get: she and him, bon iver, the raconteurs, the black keys, kings of leon, jenny lewis, and the hold steady.

i still can’t stand conor oberst and death cab though.

currently listening to lil wayne on youtube. it’s good stuff. i read the article in gq about him and even though he appeared slightly into himself, he seems like a hard worker.

i still can’t believe laura marling’s record hasn’t gotten more praise.

brothers

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

both of my brothers hate to be photographed. i think. well, at least my younger one, wes, does.

we are all like complete 180’s of each other. but, get along for the most part. except wes didn’t buy nathan a xmas present for the second year in a row. it was pretty funny.

nathan is a proud father of two and husband to april.

wes is 16 and owns a business.

in review

the year saw a lot of stuff. it was a transitional year for sure. two good little vacations in the first few months; florida and colorado.

i didn’t work for the first half of it. i took out a loan and focused on school (lol). lots of jams and friend time.

i was completely and utterly stupid on a lot of fronts over the year (mainly dealing with girls).

lost some friends to far away places. lost a friend.

saw more friends get engaged and married. i’m trying to think of all the weddings. i missed like 5 or 6 b/c i live so far from the home (heart, soul).

my little brother can now finally legally drive. that’s a trip to see. he’s already been pulled over 5 times. way more than his older brothers, mother, and dad almost combined.

i got more flat tires this year than any other year.

improved the guitar skills, only slightly though.

moved the farthest from home that i think i could possibly do in the continental united states.

got worse as a photographer.

got more scared and confused about the future, but am hopeful as shit.

drank more coffee than i ever have.

have the cheapest rent in like 3 years.

became totally obsessed with socks.

year number 3 without owning a tv. yet i still make internet time for the office and for entourage and of course will do so when the new season of curb comes out next year.

have been blogging like a mad man. and i really get mad when my friends go so long between posts.

had one of the best fucking summers of my life thanks to my wonderful friends here in bellingham.

saw the fewest concerts in a year i have ever seen. only two i think. (big names)

it was a fun year, but kinda odd.

i don’t really have a favorite picture, album, song, yada.

foggy has been my favorite blog.

what will 2009 bring?

probably more tuxedos and flights.
