Light Rays

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Katie and I were out in the canoe the other night when we saw these crazy light rays after the sun had set. Turns out they’re called anti-crepuscular rays. There’s a cool little explanation HERE.

Fly Fishing

Monday, April 12th, 2010

A few weeks back I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to cover the opening day of trout and salmon fishing in New Hampshire. I love assignments that require me to wake up early. When I was starting out as a photographer, I dreamed of one day living the National Geographic lifestyle. I wanted to wake up early, sleep during the day, and then go back out in the late afternoon when the light was just right.

I still get that tickling, exciting feeling in my stomach whenever I have to wake up early. I like knowing that when most of the world is sleeping, I’m photographing. For some reason or another it makes me take my craft more seriously.

A River Runs Through It, which is completely dedicated to fly fishing, is one of my favorite books and I just love the movie. One of favorite quotes comes from that book.

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.
I am haunted by waters.” — Norman Maclean

HERE is the lead image that ran in the paper. Below are a few of my favorite outtakes.

Mallard Drake Swimming

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

I was driving over a bridge a few weeks back and saw several ducks. They were swimming and walking all over the ice. I patiently waited for a mallard drake, the green-headed duck, to swim alone by itself and sure enough it did.

One of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken is of a mallard drake. It’s from way back in 2007 when I was walking through a park in Springfield, Illinois.

See that picture HERE.

Iridescent Cloud

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

I’ve been looking at the sky a lot lately. It’s amazing to think of all that’s up there. I saw an iridescent cloud today during a walk. The colors are visible due to sunlight hitting small droplets of water or ice in the cloud. Pretty neat stuff.
